We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. — Isaiah 53:6
All of us have strayed off the path, wandered out of the field, and become lost. All of us.
If you are one millimetre off the path are you off the path? You are just as off the path as someone who is miles from it, because it isn’t about how far off you are. The question is whether you are on the path at all. God wants us to understand we have all gone our own way. We are all lost, and no one is more in need or less in need of being found. We are all off the path, and it doesn’t matter how close or far we think we might be.
We are all equality in need of God’s grace, because we are all equally guilty of sin. It doesn’t matter if we imagine we are just a little sin away from the path or that God could never want someone as bas as ourself. One millimetre, one wrong, is all it takes.
Perhaps we feel that isn’t fair, but any sin at all takes us away from God’s presence. He says that even our most righteous deeds-all the good things that we do-are still meaningless before we come to Jesus because they come from a sinful heart.
But Jesus took all of our sins on Himself. Everyone’s. The person we consider the worst, and the person we consider the best, and all of our own. God’s love and grace is big enough to cover and forgive them all. We may think this is unreasonable on God’s part, how can He just forgive people who have done horrible things and let them into heaven?
But the amazing thing to ask is this: why does God forgive anyone at all, why does He forgive me? He is concerned with loving you and making you His own child. We do not need to worry about how He deals with others or in what way. He loves all of us!
Jesus said, “whoever believes in me will not die but have eternal life.” Regardless of how big or how small our sins appear to us, we are all in need of God’s forgiveness. And by His grace He freely gives it to us. Jesus already took every one of our sins on Himself when He died, and proved it by His resurrection. All we have to do is believe!
